Search for online courses after 12th and you’ll get two kinds of results: universities selling online degrees, and platforms selling certificates. Both are advertising. Neither will tell you the one thing that matters most — whether the thing you’re about to pay for will still count for something in five years.
Some online courses are genuinely valuable. Some are legally invalid for government jobs and higher studies, and students only discover this when they apply somewhere and get rejected.
This guide separates the three completely different things people mean by “online courses,” explains the UGC rules that decide whether an online degree is real, and gives an honest answer on what most students should actually do after II PU.
First: there are three different things being sold
Almost every argument about online learning happens because people are talking about different products.
Type 1 — Online degrees. A full B.Com, BBA, BCA or BA delivered entirely online by a university. This is a degree, and it is regulated.
Type 2 — Online skill courses and certifications. Python, digital marketing, financial modelling, graphic design, data analytics. These are not degrees. They are skills you stack on top of something else.
Type 3 — Online coaching for professional exams. CA, CS, CMA, ACCA preparation delivered online. This is exam preparation, not a qualification in itself.
They have different rules, different value and different risks. Take them one at a time.
Type 1: Online degrees — the rules you must know
An online degree in India is only valid if the university has specific permission from the UGC’s Distance Education Bureau to run that particular programme in that particular year. A general university licence is not enough.

How many universities are approved? < cite index=”55-1″>As of the 2026-27 cycle, 113 higher education institutions are entitled by UGC to offer online programmes, collectively offering 756 online programmes at UG and PG levels, with a further 13 recognised institutions offering 46 more.</cite>
Are online degrees equivalent to campus degrees? Yes — if approved. < cite index=”57-1″>UGC-DEB approved degrees are treated as equivalent to campus degrees, with a 2022 Supreme Court ruling providing additional legal backing.</cite>
Is there a mandatory registration step? Yes, and students miss it. < cite index=”59-1″>From the 2025-26 academic session, UGC-DEB made it mandatory for every student enrolling in any ODL or online degree programme to create a DEB ID before completing admission. Students who apply without a valid DEB ID will find their admission incomplete and legally invalid.</cite> < cite index=”61-1″>The DEB-ID is generated on the UGC-DEB portal after registering an Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) ID, and once generated it remains valid for life.</cite>
Which subjects cannot be taken online? < cite index=”59-1″>Under current UGC guidelines, medical degrees — MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BUMS, BHMS and allied health sciences — cannot be offered through ODL or online mode, because they require mandatory practical and clinical training.</cite> < cite index=”56-1″>The restriction extends to allied practical-heavy subjects such as microbiology and pharmaceutical studies.</cite>
Can I do an online degree and a regular degree at the same time? < cite index=”57-1″>Mostly not. UGC clarifications restrict simultaneous full-time and online degrees.</cite> Check the current rule before assuming you can stack two degrees.
What about an online PhD? < cite index=”57-1″>Not permitted. UGC does not currently allow online PhD programmes, as a PhD requires campus residency and active research supervision.</cite>
How to verify an online university in five minutes
Do this before you pay anything.
- Go to deb.ugc.ac.in. < cite index=”58-1″>This is the only authoritative source — avoid third-party lists.</cite>
- Open the “Entitled Institutions for Online Programmes” list.
- Search for your university.
- Check your exact programme. < cite index=”58-1″>Approval is programme-specific — check the course, not just the university name.</cite>
- Confirm the session. < cite index=”58-1″>Make sure the programme is approved for the year you’re enrolling in.</cite>
One more caution: approval can be withdrawn. < cite index=”62-1″>UGC has banned specific universities from offering online programmes for multiple academic sessions, including under the “Entitled Category.”</cite> A university that was approved when your senior enrolled may not be approved now.
Why this matters: < cite index=”59-1″>A degree from a university not on the UGC-DEB approved list will not be recognised for central government employment — UPSC, SSC, Railways or bank recruitment.</cite> That is a permanent, unfixable outcome for three years of work.
Type 2: Online skill courses actually worth your time
This is where online learning is genuinely excellent — and where most students should be spending their online hours.
These are not replacements for a degree. They are what turns an ordinary degree into an employable one.
For commerce students (B.Com, BBA):
- Advanced Excel and financial modelling — the single highest-return skill for a commerce graduate
- Tally and accounting software
- GST and taxation practical courses
- Power BI or Tableau for reporting
- Digital marketing fundamentals
For technology-leaning students (BCA):
- Python and SQL — start with SQL, it is used daily in more jobs than Python
- Web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, then a framework)
- Cloud fundamentals (AWS or Azure entry certifications)
- Git and version control — small, unglamorous, and expected in every job
For everyone, regardless of stream:
- AI literacy — using these tools well, knowing where they fail, verifying output
- Business communication and presentation
- Basic data literacy — reading a chart correctly, spotting a misleading statistic
The distinguishing feature of a good skill course is that you produce something at the end. A course that ends in a quiz gives you a certificate. A course that ends in a working project gives you something to show in an interview. Only the second one is worth your time.
Type 3: Online coaching for professional courses
If you’re planning CA, CS, CMA or ACCA, online coaching is now the norm rather than the exception, and quality has improved substantially.
What to check before enrolling:
- Are the recorded lectures for the current syllabus? Institutes recycle old batches.
- Is there doubt-clearing, and how fast is the turnaround?
- Are mock tests included, and are they evaluated by a human?
- What is the actual pass rate, not the topper count on the banner?
Be realistic about the discipline required. Online coaching removes the commute and adds the entire burden of self-scheduling. Students who struggled with attendance in II PU often struggle more here, not less.
Online degree vs campus degree: the honest comparison

The honest summary: online degrees exist to solve constraints, not to be a better option. They are excellent for someone already working, someone with family responsibilities, someone in a location with no good college nearby, or someone adding a second qualification.
For an 18-year-old with the option of attending a campus, they are usually the weaker choice — not because the degree is worth less on paper, but because the three years are worth less in practice. Placements, mentorship, peer groups, project work and the habit of showing up are the real product of a college, and none of them ship over a video call.
What most students should actually do
The strongest combination for a student finishing II PU is this:
A campus degree, plus online skill courses running alongside it.
You get the structure, placements and network of a college. You get the specific, current, employable skills from online platforms — often free or inexpensive. And by graduation you have a degree and a portfolio, which is the combination employers are actually filtering for.
Three years of a campus degree with two or three serious online skills stacked on top beats an online degree with nothing on top, every time.

Five mistakes to avoid
Paying before verifying UGC-DEB approval. Five minutes on deb.ugc.ac.in. Do it first, every time.
Skipping the DEB ID. Without it, your admission is not valid. This is a paperwork step that quietly invalidates entire degrees.
Collecting certificates instead of building skills. Twenty certificates and zero projects is a weaker profile than two certificates and two working projects.
Choosing an online degree to save time. It doesn’t save time. It saves commute and costs you placements.
Believing “recognised by an international body” claims. For Indian government jobs and higher education, only UGC recognition counts.
